VT Graduate Alisha Johns shares this insight to current marketing students: "Don't underestimate the power of social media, and use it to your advantage".

Following graduation in 2013, Alisha began following her dreams and has proven to everyone that turning dreams into a reality is possible. Her love of marketing began in college as she pursued freelance work on Copywriting, SM, etc. and her passion continued to blossom as she worked on the Agency side after college. That's where Alisha's story is unique.

While at these companies, she was growing a following of thousands on her personal Instagram account. Alisha used social media to get the job, and, more importantly, to differentiate herself and grow her own personal brand.

In 2016, Alisha founded LISH creative, a content agency and consulting firm for vibrant lifestyle, & hospitality brands based out of Los Angeles. She has been recognized for her work in various publications, including Mashable, Domino, The Washington Post, and more.

After checking out LISH's portfolio, any marketing student would want to know exactly how Alisha has been so wildly successful.

From graduating a few years ago, to now employing 6 part-time contractors and doing work where her passion meets a need for clients, Alisha has a lot to be proud of. Her advice to current VT Marketing Students is to: “Do the type of work you want to do on the side for fun and build a portfolio, and be consistent with that brand over time."

Looking back on the biggest things Alisha took away from Pamplin, she remembered two important lessons. The first, she adopted while being held accountable to blogging during a semester abroad. This inherently instilled a habit of constant content creation in her that came to help her in years to come. Second, Alisha treasures the relationships she made in Blacksburg. "One of the other girls in my study abroad program now works at  a prominent PR agency, and we have worked together many times. The Hokie Network can come in handy!”

Alisha exemplifies taking control of your career and using imagination, skill, and drive to accomplish goals that once felt so far away.
